Marilyn Davis Hardy's 'Favorite Places' on display at Oliver Wolcott Library

Marilyn Davis Hardy's "Favorite Places," a body of work celebrating the natural beauty of Connecticut, Rhode Island, Cape Cod, Maine and the Hudson River Valley, will be on display at the Oliver Wolcott Library, 160 South Street, Litchfield, July 31 to Aug. 24. Represented in this collection are street scenes, churches, beaches and lighthouses.

A reception will be held at the library from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 2.

Inspired by her love of Early Christian and Byzantine illuminated manuscripts, Marilyn incorporates symbolism into her artwork in often surprising and always delightful ways. Oil on heavy rag paper, along with airbrush and pencil are used to complete her pieces with the occasional addition of collage. Oil paint is used to color her etchings. Angels, illuminated letters and universal symbols are woven into her carefully patterned surfaces.

Marilyn Davis Hardy has shown her paintings and etchings in more than fifty shows throughout Connecticut, Illinois, California, and Florida. She is a graduate of Wheaton College and the recipient of the Ford Foundation Grant to study painting at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. Marilyn and her husband, Gerald Hardy, live in Falls Village, Connecticut where they produce sculptures, paintings and color etchings. Her website is www.favoriteplaces.com.

40 runners from age 6 to 64 compete in track competition

The first "Night of Miles" was held Tuesday night at the Litchfield Plumb Hills track complex.

Under hot and steamy conditions, 40 runners in ages from 6 to 64 took part in one mile runs by age-group.

The sole record of the night was in the male 10-12 Division as Matthew Remigino, 11, of West Hartford knocked a whopping 24 seconds off the old record with a 5:10 clocking. Matthew, whose grandfather, Lindy Remigino, won the 100 meter dash in the 1952 Olympics will compete in the National Junior Olympic Championships in Baltimore, Md. next week in the 1500m and 3000m runs. Matthew's mother, Meredith, win the 40-49 division with a 6:00 clocking.

Closest race finish was in the 50-59 men's division as New Hartford's Bob Deming caught early leader Tom Brayton on the backstretch and held off a final challenge by Brayton to win the mile, 5:54 to 5:58.

The mile series, in its sixth year, is sponsored by the Litchfield Park and Recreation and the Litchfield Track Club. The next race will be on Tuesday, Aug. 21, at 6:30 p.m.

The fourth week of the Summer Seriec cross country races will be held Thursday, July 19, at White Memorial Conservation center at 6:30 p.m.
